The ghost dog of Kona was seen at the post office, probably the Greenwell store

Ghost Dog of Kona

Headline of 1927 newspaper article reads, "Boki, spirit dog, believed seen in Kona"

On a chilly October night in 1927, something eerie happened to Miss Ho‘opili, a teacher at Konawaena School. She and a group of friends to walk to the Post Office late one night, braving the cold and the unsettling, sickly glow of the midnight moon. The road was lined with dense trees, their shadows stretching out ominously in the faint light, casting a strange atmosphere over the scene.

When they reached the Post Office, the others went inside, but Miss Ho‘opili lingered on the porch, a sense of unease creeping over her. Something didn’t feel right. As she scanned the area, her gaze fell upon the road, where a yellowish shape began to emerge through the mist and fog. Her breath caught in her throat as the vague form slowly took on the appearance of a massive dog, its eyes and teeth glistening eerily in the dim moonlight.

1927 eyewitness account of ghost dog in Kona

The beast crouched as if preparing to leap, its body trembling with an unsettling energy. Just then, the other women came out of the Post Office, only to find Miss Ho‘opili frozen in terror, unable to speak, pointing towards the road. There, in the center, the enormous yellow shadow stood, motionless, watching them. The women could do nothing but stare in disbelief as the figure began to rise slowly, hovering over the coffee trees, and then it vanished into the night with only a slight rustle of leaves.

Hawai‘i has a long history of spirit dogs, but they’re not all malevolent. Still, if you ever find yourself on a dark Kona road and spot a stray dog slinking through the shadows, it’s best to let it pass undisturbed. Because in the dead of night, you never know what might be watching you from the darkness.
