Haunted Waikīkī

Waikīkī is known for its beaches, its resorts, and its endless flow of visitors—but long before the hotels rose along the shoreline, this area was something else entirely.

What many people don’t realize is that Waikīkī was once filled with wetlands, fishponds, and pathways that connected places of importance. Ali‘i made their homes in this area, and burials were common here.

Much of the landscape was transformed in the early 20th century with the construction of the Ala Wai Canal. Wetlands were drained, land was reshaped, and what we now recognize as Waikīkī began to take form. But… while the land changed, those stories remained.

Today, in the shadow of the hotels, Waikīkī carries a quieter history that continues to surface in unexpected ways.
