Among the pictures was a shot of the old Painted Church, still perched on blocks after being relocated from Kalapana to escape a lava flow. The church looked as it should, except for one detail... a mysterious figure of a woman, peering out from a church window.
‘She wasn’t there when I took the picture,’ Geno insisted. The woman appeared to be dressed in a nun’s habit, her face hauntingly calm.
And Geno wasn’t alone. Just days later, a woman from Honolulu called the newspaper, saying she had a similar experience. She, too, had taken a picture of the same church. When her daughter saw the photos, she asked, ‘Mom, what’s this nun doing in the window?’
Eerily, the same ghostly figure appeared in both photos. Yet, despite the unsettling nature of these stories, the Honolulu Advertiser never printed the images, leaving the ghostly nun’s identity—and existence—an unsolved mystery.
