Ghosts have been seen at this leaping place of spirits next to one of Hawaii's most haunted resort

Sheraton Maui Ghosts

Most of the ghostly activity at this haunted Maui resort seems to center around Pu‘u Keka‘a, or Black Rock, a place steeped in spiritual significance. Known as a leina ka ‘uhane, or a 'jumping point' for souls, Pu‘u Keka‘a is believed to be where the spirits of the recently deceased leap into Pō, the afterlife.

Hawaii's most haunted resort has ghost activity, tourists call police

One particularly chilling story involves two couples who decided to indulge in a moonlit swim below Pu‘u Keka‘a. As they enjoyed the night, one of the women glanced up at the cliff and witnessed a terrifying scene: a man appeared to push a woman off the edge, sending her plummeting onto the rocks below. In a state of shock, the visitors immediately called the police. However, despite a thorough search, no body was found. A night watchman later claimed that the figures the woman saw were ghosts, a man who repeatedly pushed the woman off the cliff.

Ghost seen by security vanishes at Hawaii's most haunted resort, Maui

In another spine-tingling encounter, a security guard observed an older Hawaiian woman walking along the beach towards Pu‘u Keka‘a. Concerned for her safety, he followed her. But as she reached the base of the rock, she vanished into thin air. Bewildered, he reported the incident to his coworker, asking for assistance in finding the woman. The coworker dismissed the request, saying, “No way! She’s a ghost. I’ve seen her walk plenty times. She going pop up again on the Royal Lahaina side.”

Even the night maintenance crew have their own ghostly tales. They report seeing a Hawaiian man standing in front of one of the nearby beach cottages. Dressed in a malo and kihei and wearing a mākini (gourd head covering that looks like a helmet) with kapa strands hanging down, the man stands motionless with his arms crossed. This mākini, this mask, is worn by priests who served under the god, Kūkā‘ilimoku. The mākini is meant to hide his appearance from the god, Lono, during the makahiki period. The presence of this priest signifies a sacred space and adds to the eerie atmosphere of the area, leaving the staff with a constant sense of unease.

The Sheraton-Maui’s tales of spirits and apparitions continue to captivate and unsettle, proving that even the most luxurious settings can harbor a touch of the supernatural.
