"I Kou e hui aku ai na maka" - Friends meet in Kou

Hi'iaka offers these words above in a longer chant while in the presence of some people of from Pu'uloa. Simultaneously, Lohiau and Wahine'oma'o listen.

When we hear about Kaka'ako in the news lately, it's usually about some new development that has been completed, is just starting or is being proposed. In a few years, the entire area will have a completely different skyline as a landscape of high rises of million-dollar apartments take over. Like all developed areas, the picture this paints is starkly different than the lush marshland that Hi'iaka once visited on her epic quest.

"Friends meet in Kou."

Today Kaka'ako, the land from Pu'u Ualaka'a to the Makiki plains and Kewalo to Mamala, was once called Kou. It was the place named in the story of Hi'iaka where the friends shall gather. The waterline was said to go all the way up to what is now Halekauila Street. With Kou trees common throughout, people came here to play konane and drink awa. The heiau, Pakaka, stood overlooking the massive pa'akai beds.

Although the landscape has changed and all who once walked this small clump of earth are gone, the shadows of who they once were haunt the places where developers now build for the sake of building and not for the benefit of the maka'ainana.
