JUNE 27 - A BUS TOUR OF HISTORIC DOWNTOWN
In Honolulu, the land from the Makiki Plains to Pu'u Ualaka'a and Kewalo to Mamala, was once called Kou. It was the place named in the mo‘olelo of Hi'iaka where the friends shall gather. Before the dredging of Honolulu Harbor, the waterline went all the way up to what is now Halekauila and Queen Streets. With Kou trees common throughout, people came here to play konane and drink ‘awa. The heiau, Pakaka, stood overlooking the massive pa‘akai beds. Kamehameha I brought his court to Kou creating the capitol and center of business in Hawai‘i.
Although the landscape has changed and all who once walked this small clump of earth are gone, the shadows of who they once were haunt the places where developers now build for the sake of building and not for the benefit of the maka'ainana.
Even though they may have a new, modern purpose, do the old buildings in Downtown Honolulu still carry the psychic trauma of the past? Do ghosts lurk in the places as people continue to go about their daily business?
